My mural practice began ten years ago when I started painting over swear words on walls.
It was less a grand artistic calling than a practical response to some extremely unhelpful typography. But once I experienced what an image could do to a public space, I wanted to keep going.
Since then, I have painted at Meeting of Styles twice and created murals across Thailand, Singapore and the United States, from a rooftop jazz bar and a Korean restaurant in Bangkok to a neighbourhood underpass in Gary, Indiana.
Every wall begins with its surroundings. I research the place, its people, and the story it needs to carry before developing the concept, sketching the composition, and scaling it into the space.
Murals bring both sides of my practice together: a Creative Director’s need for a clear idea and an artist’s willingness to spend several days on a ladder, negotiating with weather, architecture, and gravity.
I began by painting over words nobody wanted to see.
Ten years later, I am still changing what a wall gets to say.
